When you look at all the various welding types, you may wonder which one is the best one to use, or if you can just get a setup for one kind of welding and have it fit for everything. But, it is impossible to judge which one is the best one and there isn't just one setup that you should get. Each of the types of welding has its own specialty and can be used in specific ways. There is overlap in what the types of welding do. But overall, if you are going to weld certain things, then you should check which kinds of welding work best on what you will be doing, and buy that setup.

MIG Welding

MIG welding stands for metal inert gas welding. It can also be called GMAW, gas metal arc welding. MIG welding uses an electrode that heats up with electricity and melts the metal and joins them together. The electrode is shielded by some kind of gas, and all the work being done happens under that shielding. If you are going to do MIG welding, you need to make sure that you have a constant source of DC power. GMAW is good for carbon steel, stainless steel, and magnesium.

TIG Welding

Tungsten inert gas welding, or gas tungsten arc welding, uses an electrode as well. Unlike MIG welding, the electrode used in TIG welding is made of tungsten and is consumed while the work is being done. When you are using this kind of welding, you are going to need to use both hands, because one hand has to hold onto the electrode while the other holds the rod. TIG welding is really good when used with nonferrous metals like aluminum. While TIG welding is really good with aluminum, it is a more advanced skill with this kind of welding, because aluminum can be very finicky to weld properly. The fact that aluminum is one of the metals that TIG welding is good with means it gets used a lot in the aerospace field. The one thing to watch when you are TIG welding is temperature control. You don't want to damage the metal when being heated up by being welded.

Welding is a process used in many fields and by many people. There are different types of welding, and which one you used depends on what kind of metal you are welding, as well as what the purpose of the weld is. You would use a different kind of welding if you were working underwater than you would if you were welding on land.
